Sunday, August 3
On Sunday morning the ocean was teeming with activity. We first headed South to race rocks for a look at the historic lighthouse and hoards of harbour seals hauled up on the rocks at low tide and swimming in the kelp beds. As the fog got thick, we headed back East and ran into a "bird-ball", a feeding frenzy for gulls who were clearly on to a big group of baitfish. Also joining in on the hunt were harbour seals from nearby trial island. Later on that afternoon, members of J and L pods made their way up Rosario and off the coast of San Juan Island, where we watched from the Orca Spirit. This group of whales is known for their acrobatics, and they really showed us why today, with no less than five breaches in our time with them. Thanks to the whales and the beautiful weather, Sunday turned out to be a great day.
