It was an exhilarating morning as our boats headed east into some choppy seas in search of whales on our 9 am trips. Our passengers had a very scenic trip as we ventured through San Juan Channel around the north end of Lopez Island, and then south into Rosario Strait to find J-Pod in a playful mood. Our customers were treated to a spectacular show with several spectacular breaches, spyhops and tail slaps from a large group of J-Pod whales that included Ruffles. Shortly after leaving J-Pod, we found part of L-Pod! Our customers had excellent viewing opportunities of the new L-Pod baby, and were treated to some more spectacular whale behaviour with several breaches occurring in the distance. It was truly a spectacular morning!
Our afternoon trip found the whales closer to Victoria, foraging near Pile Point on San Juan Island. We were fortunate to be able to view many different whales from J and K Pod. A highlight of the trip for many of our passengers aboard the zodiac occurred when we were able to observe a wonderful social interaction between a mother and calf that were putting on quite a playful display. Not to be outdone, Ruffles (J1) and Granny (J2) were seen actively foraging together and our customers were able to see the hunting prowess of these two amazing whales at work. Granny and Ruffles are a mother and son who have been together since Ruffles was born approximately 55 years ago. It was an amazing trip!
